Meet our Orthodontic Treatment Advisor Leanne. Here she shares some insights into her work life…

What motivated you to become an Orthodontic Treatment Advisor?

I was approached by Dr Guy Deeming and Dr Uzma Olbrich to become treatment advisor for Queensway Orthodontics and Dental Clinic. I was ready for a change so jumped at the chance to learn new skills.

What kind of training/ qualifications did you need to become an Orthodontic Treatment Advisor?

I have been a dental nurse for 21 years (I feel old saying that) – 19 years of which have been with Queensway. I also have my NEBDN certificate, Dental Sedation and Dental Radiography qualifications and I think lots of dental experience has set me in good stead for the role.

What is a typical working week like for you?

I work full time Monday to Friday 8.30am until 5.30pm with a bit extra if I need to. I still don’t switch off when at home – I respond to emails all the time.

I see lots of new patients for their initial orthodontic consultation, arrange finance and payment plans and I am generally the first point of contact for all new patient enquiries to the practice.

We have a very busy practice so the time goes really quickly. By the time Friday comes I am ready for a glass of red wine and to put my feet up.

What do you like most about your career?

I get to meet lots of new patients and I love chatting to them. I find it very easy to engage in conversation.  I hope I make them feel relaxed before their appointment. I love seeing the end result after their treatment is completed and how confident they are with their new smile. I feel honoured to be part of such a highly skilled team and I am often overwhelmed by some of the transformations that my colleagues have done for some of our patients. They really do change lives, it’s amazing.

What trends or new technology have you recently seen in the dentistry field/office?

Within Queensway, the Skin Clinic is growing more popular; Dr Uzma Olbrich and Dr Rebecca Hierons are our skin aestheticians. They are both highly skilled and experienced in facial rejuvenation. Who doesn’t want beautiful skin or the perfect pout to complement their new smile? I wouldn’t trust anyone else with my face.

Tooth whitening and composite bonding is also very popular.

Why did you choose to work at Queensway over other Dental Practices?

I can’t ever imagine working anywhere else. I have worked in every department of Queensway over the last 19 years. I have watched it grow and am really proud to be part of it. We have so many opportunities. Queensway supports the staff with education and we even have our own education centre and dental laboratory.

What advice would you give someone considering a career as an Orthodontic Treatment Advisor?

The best advice I could give someone is to be yourself. Patients want someone they can relate to. Listen to their concerns, don’t try and sell them a brace. Give them the information they need to make their own decision. Make the person you are speaking to feel confident that they are in the best place to have their treatment and be there to hold their hand if they need you.
