Looking after your braces

An important part of ensuring your braces work effectively is keeping them in tip top shape. Once our experienced team have fitted you with your orthodontic appliance, we'll talk you through the brushing and cleaning that is required of both your teeth and your appliance throughout treatment. This will help to ensure you get the best results possible.

As always, feel free to contact us if you have any questions. We want you to achieve the smile you've always dreamed of so are more than happy to help you throughout your treatment journey.

How to get great results

To get the best results from your braces you will need to attend regular visits to us here at Queensway Orthodontics. It's also important you keep them clean, let us know if anything happens to them, and avoid eating foods that can damage the brackets and archwires.

When you come in for treatment, we’ll advise you on the best way to look after your braces as different types will need different care. It’s important you follow these instructions because problems associated with poor dental hygiene can arise if you don’t.

Get the most out of your braces

Braces are an effective orthodontic treatment for straightening teeth, but wearing them isn’t enough. To get the best results from your braces you need to care for them properly. This involves regular visits to us here at Queensway Orthodontics, making sure you keep them clean, letting us know if anything happens to them and avoiding foods that can damage the brackets and archwires.

When you come in for treatment, we’ll advise you on the best way to look after your braces as different types will need different care. It’s important you follow these instructions because problems associated with poor dental hygiene can arise if you don’t.

9 top tips for brace care

  1. Have your braces checked and adjusted every six to eight weeks. If this does not happen, your treatment will not progress and your teeth can be damaged.
  2. Keep all your appointments
  3. Keep your braces clean – we will show you how to do this and can provide you with a care pack full of things to help
  4. Don’t eat or drink anything sugary, sticky or hard (such as chewing gum or toffee)
  5. Don’t chew pencils or fingernails
  6. Don’t fiddle with your braces
  7. Let us know as soon as you have a problem – please don’t leave it until your next visit
  8. Attend regular check-ups with your family dentist
  9. After your fixed braces have been removed, you will be advised to wear a retainer. This may be removable or fixed behind the teeth. This is perhaps the most important part of your treatment, as teeth can move back long after braces have been removed.
